Karen Chen is the Special Projects Director with Community Labor United (CLU). Prior to joining the CLU staff team, Karen was the Managing Director at Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative. For 2 decades, Karen worked for the Chinese Progressive Association, a grassroots community-based organization that works for the full equality and empowerment of the Chinese community in the greater Boston area and beyond, and a strong community partner to CLU. Karen’s training began at age 10 when she immigrated to the US and became the de facto interpreter and advocate for her immigrant working class family. She later honed her leadership and organizing skills as a youth intern with the Coalition of Asian and Pacific American Youth and the Chinese Youth Initiative, a Tenant Service Coordinator at the Castle Square Apartments in the South End, and a paralegal at Greater Boston Legal Services’ Asian Outreach Unit.
