MBTA riders and transportation justice leaders to speak out on life changing low-income fare
MBTA Board expected to approve significant fare discounts for more than 60,000 Massachusetts residents
BOSTON — On Thursday, March 28, MBTA riders, workers, and public transportation advocates will gather at MBTA headquarters as the Board of Directors vote to approve a measure establishing a low-income fare that would support thousands of working-class riders who rely on public transit the most. If the MBTA Board approves the fare discount, it would cut fares roughly in half for riders who qualify, resulting in annual savings of up to $720 for daily bus and subway riders, and $1,908 for certain commuter rail riders.
There’s widespread public support for a low-income fare, with 84 percent of Commonwealth residents supporting discounted rates on the T and commuter rail for income-eligible riders.
